Kids Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Similar to those provided to our adult patients, our kids’ dental checkups and cleanings include digital X-rays (if needed) as well as a careful and gentle examination of their mouth. We’ll not only look for signs of cavities and decay but also check their bite and jaw development to ensure everything is progressing as it should. Our team will also perform a professional cleaning to rid their teeth and gums of plaque and tartar as well as discuss ways to properly brush and floss at home.

Dental Sealants

It takes time for children to hone their oral hygiene skills, which is why it’s important that we protect their molars and premolars with dental sealants. Since these are often some of the hardest teeth to reach for smaller hands, they’re more prone to cavities because of the pits and fissures in their chewing surfaces. With dental sealants, though, we can apply a clear, protective coating that prevents bacteria from penetrating and wreaking havoc on these teeth – a solution that can last up to 10 years.

Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment

Although we always do our best to prevent cavities, we also provide treatment options should one arise. Using silver diamine fluoride, we can effectively stop the spread of decay while also killing the bacteria inside the tooth. As a non-invasive form of treatment, the liquid substance is applied directly onto the affected tooth (or teeth). While staining does occur, it can be covered with a tooth-colored filling once a child is ready to receive restorative care.

Pulp Treatment

When a child complains of a bothersome toothache that will not go away, it may be that an infection or severe decay has spread to the inner layer of their tooth – the pulp. If this happens, Dr. Kovar and our team can administer pulp treatment and remove the infected tissues so that the child no longer experiences extreme discomfort. This process also prevents the potential need for a tooth extraction by keeping the natural structure in place with the help of a dental crown.
